PC Power Management & Green Computing

Growing public concern over the impacts of e-waste and power consumption has led many technology companies to explore ways to green their products.  Persystent enables IT to automatically enforce a PC power management policy.

PC power management dramatically reduces energy consumption and an organization’s carbon footprint.  This green computing approach is good for the bottom line and corporate global citizenship.  Persystent customers are saving thousands of dollars by implementing a PC power management policy.

Power management for computer systems are desired for many reasons, particularly:

  • Prolonging battery life for portable and embedded systems
  • Reducing cooling requirements
  • Reducing noise
  • Reducing operating costs for energy and cooling

Many PCs sit idle for 12 to 16 hours per day, burning electricity, but not doing any work, because businesses habitually leave their computers running overnight.  A PC left continuously running is estimated to cost $55 to $70 per year to power – in the aggregate the stakes aren't trivial. With millions of pieces of office equipment, a significant amount of energy is wasted when equipment is on without being used.

Computerworld
magazine ran a story on Seminole Community College using Persystent to enforce a PC power management policy.  Using an automated system, Dick Hamann, the CIO at Seminole Community College in Sanford, Fla., has found a way to save enough money to cover a professor's annual salary.  He turns off PCs at night at the 29,000-student college — an effort that may trim enough from the school's power bills to save $65,000.  You can read more about Seminole Community College’s success here.
